The United Nations (UN) is an international organization which consists of all internationally recognized countries and ostensibly promotes social equality, international law and security, and economic development. They operate out of the United Nations Building in New York City. The chief official in the United Nations is the Secretary General. (TXF: "Herrenvolk") They operate under the United Nations Charter. (TXF: "Patient X")

According to Michael Kritschgau, the UN was heated up during the 1950s when a United States experimental aircraft was almost caught in North Korea. (TXF: "Redux")

Most of Kritschgau's statements were incorrect or misguided, so it is unknown if this event truly occurred.

On a Golden Record placed aboard the Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 space-probes, Secretary General Kurt Waldheim's voice can be heard reciting an extended message of peace and goodwill which was recorded in 1977. (TXF: "Little Green Men")

In 1995, Colonel Jacob Wharton felt that the UN was too busy protecting Haitian refugees than protecting the United States soldiers who helped them. (TXF: "Fresh Bones") On April 10, the Cigarette Smoking Man was seen working with officials at the UN building. (TXF: "Anasazi")

Marita Covarrubias was the Special Representative to the Secretary General in 1996. She provided FBI Special Agent Fox Mulder with top secret information for a time. (TXF: "Herrenvolk") In actuality, she worked with the Cigarette Smoking Man. (TXF: "Zero Sum")

In 1998, Marita Covarrubias, while working for the Syndicate, traveled to Kazakhstan with a detail of Dutch UN peacekeepers. They rescued several burn victims, burned by faceless aliens. She filed a UN report on the incident soon afterwards. (TXF: "Patient X")
