  • Hi Diva, thought I would post this on your wall as you may have the most knowledge about css/js? I've been playing around with the Tooltips script and was thinking of using it like a link preview to see what a page looks like. Here is an example on my test page.

    I know one of the potential issues is longer page loading times, I've been testing the custom tooltips which results in the least loading times as the tooltip is loaded only when it has to be; not with the rest of the page.

    I want to know all admin thoughs, thanks!

    • That's very cool! Like you mentioned, the only concern I would have is longer page loading time as well as putting more strain on the wiki in general. But if that can be addressed, I'm all for it! It's definitely a great improvement.

    • I think we should give it a test run on one of the larger pages and see how it works. I can then browse that page from several different devices and let you know whether it is any slower than usual or less efficient.

    • Hi Diva, thanks for the reply! Glad you like the idea. I have actually tested it on a fairly large page. The only thing is you need to add some custom js to your common.js page for it to work.

      var tooltips_list = [

         {
             classname: 'custom-tooltip-text',
             text: "Parameter: <#parameter#>
      This is just text and HTML - wikitext won't be parsed", }, { classname: 'episode', parse: '{'+'{eptt|<#episode#>}}', }, { classname: 'character', parse: '{'+'{chtt|<#character#>}}', }, { classname: 'basic-tooltip', delay: 200, onHide: function(handle) { $(this).html($(handle).html()) }, },

      ];

      The ]; at the very end is part of the code too.

      When you get a chance to add that, you can test the page List of The X-Files episodes, i've added tooltips to all the season 1 episodes, so that's 24 in total.

    • I have added it to my common.js page. Although, is this something that all users will be having to do, or can we make it appear wiki-wide?

        Loading editor
    • we can add it to MediaWiki:Common.js if you and other admins approve of it so it can be implemented site wide.

      As far as I'm aware there is no option to toggle the tooltip on/off though. I guess we would need approval from other members/visitors as well.

    • Great, let's get the opinions of the other admins first and foremost. Then, we can host a wiki-wide poll to get everyone's opinions and if the general consensus is yes, then we can implement it for all.

    • Very neat. It's a cool little preview.

      Although It might put more strain on the wiki with loading.

      I tested it on my own device to see how it looks and rarely use my smartphone for wikis and it does not load okay for me on mobile and slow.

      It works fine on computer.

    • Hi Buffy, may I ask what phone you are using? I just signed into my account on my iPhone and the page “List of The X-Files episodes” seemed to load fine for me. I don’t think mobile version can display tooltips though as it’s not possible to hover over a link.

    • Tooltips is not active for me on mobile.

    • Is it still loading slowly for you Buffy? The load times for me on firefox on my desktop vary drastically. Sometimes the page takes as little as 5-6 seconds to load everything, or as much as 11-12 seconds. I'm not sure how much impact the tooltips have.

    • Works great on chrome browser on computer took me 7 seconds.

      Tried on my Samsung s8 phone and same slowness.

    • I wonder if other Samsung/S8 users, or maybe just Android users in general also experience slow load times. I haven't come across any slowness on mobile on iOS so far. Do you browse this wiki on your phone often Buffy?

      What do you guys think though. Are you (and mechqueste) in favor of the tooltips? No worries if you don't want it, I will revert any changes :)

    • I am in favor, personally! It doesn't seem to work on iOS nor have any effect at all (which is fine), but on a computer, it works fabulously and does not make it noticeably slower. I cannot speak for Samsung, however.

    • Thanks for feedback diva :), It looks like the three of us agree that load times on PC appear to be minimal, not sure how often Buffy uses the mobile version though, and if it would have a big effect on their experience. Unfortunately I don't think there is an option to toggle the tooltips on/off so If MechQueste is in agreement we would probably have to ask the community what their thoughts are?

    • Me too, works fine on a computer, just not on mobile. I don't use the wiki on mobile that much really, so it won't have a big effect on me. I really only use mobile to check messages and such, if something needs my attention or input, and I'm not near a computer.

      Love to hear  MechQueste's thought.

    • Hi guys, I've gone ahead and added the tooltip javascript settings to common.js - I would have liked to gathered MechQueste's thoughts as well but I don't think he/she is really active at the moment - it's been 2 weeks since the thread was made. If they're really against it I can revert the changes.
