Main article: Bertram Roosevelt Byers

Much of Byers' youth was shaped by his father; he was originally to have been given the same first name as his father had been given, Bertram, and, even though ultimately named "John Fitzgerald", both he and his father consequently shared the uncommon practice of having been named in honor of a US president — (PilotUnusual Suspects). Also, Byers was extremely influenced by stories his father told him in his youth that made him believe in the promise of his country, later even attributing much of who he eventually became to his father's stories.

In 1989, however, Byers lost contact with his father, who was angered that his son had chosen to discard a government pension by leaving his job at the FCC and opting instead to socialise with Frohike and Langly, who his father considered to be "lowlife hippy scum".

Byers would not see his father again until 2000, after Bertram Byers faked his own death without even telling his son. Believing his father to have actually died and faced with questions regarding the fatal incident, Byers was insistent on investigating his father's death with the other Lone Gunmen, even after Frohike attempted to convince him that, although Byers was hoping to discover his father was someone he could respect, he might be disappointed and there were other ways to make peace with his father.

Byers was so determined to discover the circumstances surrounding his father's death that, at one point, he alone attempted to supervise the complete download of a secured Department of Defense file important to the investigation, even though the other Lone Gunmen were extremely reluctant to continue downloading the file, as the intrusive hacking they had carried out in their attempt to obtain the information had been detected and their location was being tracked until one of the Lone Gunmen shut down their computer. — (Pilot)
