Doug Spinney showing old trees cut down illegally
Doug Spinney was an eco-terrorist who, with his group of like minded friends, was actively involved in "monkey wrenching", or sabotaging logging operations in an effort to hinder deforestation around Washington State's Olympic National Forest.
He was a veteran who fought in the Vietnam war and dropped Agent Orange on the forests. Seeing what it did to both the forest and humans exposed to it shocked him into trying to preserve the environment after the war. Federal Forest Service agent Larry Moore mentioned that while he agrees with Spinney's goals in principle, he doesn't approve of the group's methods.
Spinney and his group were camped near a Schiff-Immergut Lumber Company logging camp when the loggers illegally felled an old growth tree, releasing a deadly species of wood mite. One night, he was involved in acts of sabotage at the logging camp when the mites attacked.
When Fox Mulder, Dana Scully, Steve Humphreys and Larry Moore came to the camp looking for the missing loggers, they found Spinney, who was the only survivor. He told them what had happened and that the mites didn't like light, so they had to keep the generators going. Though initially reluctant to believe him, due to his story and reputation, they were forced to when Humphreys met he death by the insects.
The next morning, Mulder caught Spinney attempting to steal the battery from the investigator's truck, which had been disabled by an anti-vehicle trap set by the eco-terrorists. Spinney claimed that he was worried about his friends, and that his group had a Jeep that needed a battery and gasoline to work. Despite the risk, Mulder chose to believe him and let him go. This left them with only enough gasoline to power the generator one more night.
The next day, Spinney did return with the Jeep, claiming that his friends hadn't made it. He gave a ride to the agents back down the mountain as night fell, but in their haste, hit another anti-vehicle trap. Spinney left the Jeep to investigate and was swarmed by the insects. He ran off into the forest, leaving his fate unknown. (TXF:Darkness Falls).
